There are plenty of great reasons to buy antiques, but one of the best is if you buy wisely, you’ve got yourself an investment. And unlike a stock or bond, you can enjoy your asset on the mantelpiece, your wall, or in the centre of your dining room! When it comes time to sell – if it ever does – you have a good chance of getting your money back, perhaps with a profit! Most new items, by contrast, lose much of their original value the minute they leave the store.

• Good quality and fine workmanship, unlike many of the mass-produced factory-made articles of today
• Uniqueness (some antique items can’t be made any more due to time constraints, unavailability of materials, loss of the art)

Remember, the golden rule in collecting antiques is to always buy the very best you can afford. If you can’t afford to start at the top of the line, buy what you can afford now, then consider ‘trading up’ later.
